The first question most customers have is "Isn't it cheaper to just buy a new computer rather than have my old one fixed?" That is the perfect first question. There are some computers that although can be repaired may not be worth being repaired. As a rule of thumb a computer older than 4 years is a candidate for replacement. there is a "but" that goes along with that last statement. I will get back to that in a few minutes. What you're asking as a consumer is, "is the repair on my computer going to cost nearly as much as buying a new computer? Wouldn't that be a waste of money?" Ok, lets put a few details on this situation. Lets say the computer in need of repair is a year and a half old and the purchase price was $899.00. Now lets look at what's important, this customer has 18 months of personal data, pictures, emails, financial software, a stocks portfolio, and a hand full of programs they purchased and installed on their old computer. And up to the point of the need for repair was adequate for there needs.
Ok now we have some details to work with. Lets look at the personal data and files issue first. Obviously if this customer opted to buy new instead of a repair all of their personal data won't be on the new computer. And like most people has not made copies or backed up anything. So now the cost of the new computer lets say is on sale for $699.00 just bumped up a $100.00 to pay for the data transfer from the old computer to the new one.
The second issue here is , this customer had purchased a few programs that they installed on the old computer. Well this gets a little sticky. The customer say "no big deal, they can be installed on the new computer, right?" Um, did you read any of the licence agreements when you installed those programs? - The fact is, yes you can install those programs. BUT you may be doing it illegally. Many software developers have limits to how many computers their programs can be installed on, even if your are destroying the original computer the software was installed on. You may have to re-purchase those programs for your new computer. So now the cost of your new computer has just been raised even more. You see where I'm going with this. Just because new computers are less expensive to buy doesn't mean it's better to buy new instead of repairing your current computer.
The bottom line is this. Every situation is a little different, and sometimes it is better to buy new, but on the other hand don't jump into a new purchase before you've done some homework on the real cost and inconvenience of a replacement. |
